My voice teacher and I had a conversation recently about how her songs beg the question: Where does voice become witchcraft? When and why have women been told not to vocalize like this. I collected some quotes about her (below) to give a bit of context if you don’t know her.
“Diamanda Galás, the ferocious Greek-American voodoo-blues medusa.”
The Guardian, December 2009
“Whore, saint, demon, lover, madwoman or angel, there is no other voice in rock, jazz or the avant-garde with her violence, consuming passion and pure elemental force.” –John Gill, Time Out London
“Her performance is worth prolonged attention and reflection.” –Dnevnik
City of Women 2009 Festival, Slovenia
“I cannot create anything that bores me.” –Diamanda Galas
Below is a small selection of Galas’ visual art, painting on fabric, which are beautiful on their own and especially fascinating when compared to her vocal aesthetics. More of her work can be found at her website www.diamandagalas.com
The Self-Portrait is partoicularly interesting to me as it looks like she has painted a ‘vibrational x-ray’ of herself while she is singing.
